For only the second time in her established career, Coco Gauff had to withdraw from a match, ending her participation in this year’s Indian Wells. She retired mid-match against Alexandra Eala, citing an apparent left arm injury.
Despite coming into the match following a strong victory in the opening round, Gauff seemed unwell. She struggled significantly with her service game, unable to hold serve even once during the entire match.

Suspicions were confirmed when the American requested a medical timeout for a left arm problem just before the first set concluded. Post-match, Gauff revealed that the issue started bothering her as early as the second game.
Gauff stated, «We’ll determine the exact nature of it tomorrow, but based on the sensation, I’ve been told it’s likely nerve-related. I’ve never experienced anything like this before, never felt such a sensation. As the match progressed, it worsened considerably, even during shots where I wasn’t actively using my left arm.»
Ultimately, the discomfort became too severe for Gauff. Trailing by a set and a break, she had to retire from the contest, even though she initially tried to push through the pain out of respect for her opponent and friend, Eala.
Eala Displays Poise During an Emotional Victory
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Alexandra Eala, who had suffered a significant defeat against Gauff just weeks prior in Dubai, can take encouragement from the composure and high level of play she demonstrated throughout what became a very emotional match. Following the abrupt conclusion, Eala was quick to commend Gauff, recognizing her as one of her role models on the tour.
Eala expressed, «I want to extend my gratitude to all the incredible women who have forged paths and championed themselves and other women. Coco is among them. So, thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and a wonderful role model. I sincerely hope you are well and recover swiftly.»
The two players are close friends off the court and have previously partnered in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome last year. Moving forward, both now shift their focus. Gauff’s immediate priority is to identify and treat her injury before the Miami Open. Meanwhile, Eala will continue her impressive first appearance at Indian Wells, preparing to face Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
