Young middleweight Amir Anderson (3-0) is wasting no time, already setting his sights on a significant challenge: a fight with former world champion Patrick Teixeira.
At just 21, Anderson has finished all his professional bouts early, demonstrating his capability to end fights swiftly. His rapid career progression, however, is exceptionally ambitious, even by his own high standards, aiming for a world title shot at an unusually early stage. While not impossible, the pace Anderson seeks to maintain is remarkably aggressive for a fighter with his limited professional experience.
This ambition led the American, who turned pro last year with an impressive amateur background, to decline a deal with Top Rank, one of the most prestigious promoters, opting instead for a path with Misfits Boxing.
“We received significant interest from major promoters like Matchroom, Top Rank, and MVP,” Anderson stated, “but the decision ultimately came down to financial terms and aligning expectations. We were on the verge of signing with Top Rank when Misfits approached us. Misfits supported my ambitious goals as realistic, unlike Top Rank, who preferred a slower progression with four-round fights. That approach didn`t suit me, so I`m incredibly thankful to be with Misfits.”
Although Misfits Boxing is primarily recognized for its influencer events, the promotion is actively expanding its roster with traditional boxers. Anderson is a prime example of this expansion and is set to face Brazilian Vitor Siqueira (8-1) in an eight-round bout on August 30.
Confident of victory at Manchester Arena, `The Cashman` is already looking ahead to his next potential opponent. “Siqueira spars with Patrick Teixeira, and that`s the fight I truly want,” Anderson declared. “I feel ready now, but next year might be a more realistic timeline. If I secure and win against Teixeira, I`ll be prepared for a world title shot immediately, as that victory would place me in the top 10 of the sanctioning body rankings. My ultimate goal is to reach a world title as quickly as possible,” he affirmed.
Teixeira, particularly given his 2019 victory over Carlos Adames, represents a significant step towards world-class competition. Although the 34-year-old veteran hasn`t replicated his WBO world title success, he remains a capable and respected boxer.
Anderson`s eagerness to challenge the Brazilian is consistent with his lifelong competitive drive, which has intensified since he first began boxing. “Initially, I disliked boxing,” he confessed. “I struggled with the coaching methods and the harsh environment. I was a soft kid, but my mother encouraged me to start boxing due to our challenging upbringing in Syracuse, New York. She wanted me to develop resilience and mental toughness. I began sparring with national champions, and despite my size advantage, they consistently outboxed me. I would often cry after sessions because they were beating me, but I always believed I would eventually surpass them. That competitive spirit is what drives me today.”
Anderson`s turning point came during a pivotal “do-or-die” moment, confirming his tenacity for the demanding sport of boxing. He recounted, “At 13, while playing basketball, I told myself, `If I don`t win my next tournament, I`m quitting boxing.` So, after about 30 or 40 fights, I entered the Junior Olympics and faced Nathan Lugo, the top-ranked fighter in my weight class. He was known for knockouts, and although I felt I won, he defeated me by split decision in 2018. That loss only fueled my determination, proving to myself that I belonged among the elite.”
Today, Anderson maintains his strong belief in his ability to compete with the best, though only time will reveal if he can truly reach and sustain the highest echelons of the sport.
