Initially, a clash between Smith and Matias was rumored for November 22 in Riyadh, possibly on the undercard of the David Benavidez–Anthony Yarde event. Following Matias`s victory over Alberto Puello on July 12, Turki Alalshikh arranged a face-off in the ring between the champion and mandatory challenger Smith at Louis Armstrong Stadium. While November 29 was also considered, Smith recently confirmed to Boxing News on Saturday night that his monumental year is set to begin early.
Smith stated, «Hopefully we’ve got the contracts done by Monday next week at the latest. January the 10th, New York Barclays Center – that’s where I’ll be crowned WBC world champion.”
The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, a venue well-known for hosting numerous Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) events, currently has no other shows scheduled for January 10th. The opportunity to host this significant fight was secured by Matias`s promoters, Fresh Productions, whose purse bid of $1,900,000 surpassed the $1,710,000 offered by Smith’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing.
