Dalton Smith is set to journey to Puerto Rico for his next fight, as his promoter, Matchroom Boxing`s Eddie Hearn, was unsuccessful in yesterday’s purse bid.
Initially, the strategy was to secure the fight through the bid or an agreement, enabling Smith, with an impressive 18-0 record including 13 KOs, to challenge for his first world title on home turf in Sheffield, England.
Hearn had previously stated that discussions were held before the WBC purse bid hearing, aiming to persuade the reigning super-lightweight champion, Subriel Matias, to defend his title in the UK.
However, mandatory challenger Smith will now be the one making the long journey, as Fresh Productions, Matias’ Puerto Rico-based promoter, successfully won the rights to host the anticipated bout.
Fresh Productions’ winning bid of $1,900,000 surpassed Matchroom’s $1,710,000, thereby setting the stage and confirming the prize money for what promises to be an exciting encounter later this year.
With the standard 70-30 split for title fights, Matias, holding a formidable record of 23-2 with 22 KOs, is set to earn $1,197,000. Smith, meanwhile, will receive $513,000.
Additionally, the WBC has reserved 10% of the total purse bid as a bonus for the winner, to be awarded when the fight takes place.
The fight was initially slated for November 22, a date promised by boxing impresario Turki Alalshikh shortly after Matias controversially claimed the title from Alberto Puello via a majority decision in July.
However, with no agreement reached between the teams, Smith – fresh off a fifth-round TKO against a past-his-prime Jose Zepeda in 2023 – now faces the formidable task of challenging the champion on his home turf.
Despite the challenge, there`s a glimmer of hope for the Sheffield fighter, especially considering Liam Paro previously showed how to defeat Matias, a two-time world champion, in his own territory.
