Former IBF and WBA super-bantamweight champion Marlon Tapales successfully returned to the ring on April 27 in General Santos City, Philippines, securing a knockout victory over Indonesian opponent Jon Jon Jet.
Tapales, known as `Nightmare`, faced a challenging opponent in Jet due to his awkward style and tendency to circle the ring, although Jet lacked significant power. While it took some effort for Tapales to cut off the ring and corner Jet, he managed to land effective straight rights and left hooks.
The fight concluded in the third round. A powerful left hand from Tapales appeared to injure Jet`s nose, leading to his retirement at the end of the round. This win improves Tapales` professional record to 40-4 (21 KOs) and earned him the vacant WBC International Silver title, a significant boost to his rankings. This is Tapales` third consecutive victory since his encounter with Naoya Inoue in late 2023. Jon Jet`s record now stands at 15-2-1 (12 KOs), with both career losses coming by stoppage.
On the undercard in Santos City, Joey Canoy (24-5-2, 15 KOs) added another win for the Philippines by stopping Vietnam`s Minh Phat Sam (10-6, 8 KOs) in the tenth round. This bout was for the vacant WBC International minimumweight title.
Sam showed tremendous heart and toughness, constantly moving forward despite absorbing heavy shots from Canoy. In the tenth round, Canoy unleashed a barrage of combinations. Although Sam remained on his feet and continued attempting to fight back, the referee ultimately intervened to stop the bout and protect the courageous Vietnamese boxer.
