Undefeated boxer Lewys Parfitt first stepped into the professional ring last June, making his debut on a card featuring two Welsh title bouts. On that memorable night, Angelo Dragone, after two previous attempts, secured a dramatic victory over Jake Tinklin to claim the Welsh super-lightweight championship.

Now, with the title vacant, Aberdare`s own Parfitt is poised to fight for his inaugural professional championship. He will face Rashid Omar (8-3, 1 KO) for the very same belt at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff on September 13th.

Omar, known as `Brickfists,` arrives at this showdown following a challenging loss to Anton Haskins, although he previously demonstrated his skill by defeating Scotland`s Luke Bibby in a Celtic title eliminator earlier this year in Swansea.

For Parfitt (4-0, 1 KOs), this fight marks a significant return to the arena where his professional journey began, but now for the most crucial bout of his career so far.

“Winning the Welsh title would truly mean everything to me,” expressed Parfitt, who sharpens his skills under the tutelage of Brett Parry at Maerdy Boxing Club in the heart of the South Wales Valleys.

He added, “I’ve dedicated a considerable amount of time to boxing, achieving multiple amateur titles. Securing this professional title would be the ultimate culmination of my efforts in Wales before I pursue higher accolades.”

Before turning professional, Parfitt boasted an impressive amateur record, including the NABC Welsh championship, the Welsh 75kg Elite title in 2023, and a finalist position in the Celtic Box Cup held in Dungarvan, Ireland.

Following his pro debut, Parfitt quickly secured his first stoppage win, dominating Kasey Bradnum by sending the Essex fighter to the canvas four times within the scheduled six rounds.

He then achieved a comfortable 60-54 points victory before his most recent challenge against Ryan Frost at Swansea’s LC2, where he secured a narrow 58-56 win on judge Chris Jones’ scorecard.

Despite the close call in his last fight, the 30-year-old Parfitt sees this upcoming bout as the ideal chance to advance his career. “I simply feel ready to challenge myself at this point,” he asserted.

“With four professional fights and nearly fifty amateur contests under my belt, coupled with a later start to my professional career, now feels like the absolute right moment, especially having reached 30 this year.”

He acknowledged the challenge, stating, “Working full-time can be tough, but you have to do what’s necessary. I’m committed to becoming the best I can be in this sport, which means I understand the dedication required.”

Significantly, Omar has already achieved what Parfitt is striving for this Saturday: he previously captured a Welsh title, narrowly defeating Conor McIntosh for the lightweight belt in February 2023.

When asked about the pressure dynamics of the fight, Parfitt responded, “To be honest, I believe all the pressure is on Rashid.”

“He possesses significantly more experience than I do, both in his amateur and professional careers.”

He continued, “Many consider this fight to be premature for me, but I have unwavering faith in my capabilities and I’m fully prepared to face the best version of Rashid.”

“I’ve been aware of Rashid since our amateur days, and we were even slated to fight on one or two occasions, though it never materialized.”

“We anticipate a tough contest on Saturday. He’s experienced, extremely durable, and possesses considerable power, but I am ready for anything he brings, thanks to an excellent training camp.”
