Richard Riakporhe’s recent move to the heavyweight division follows an unsuccessful attempt at the cruiserweight world title in a rematch against Chris Billam-Smith last year, which remains his only professional defeat. After his scheduled fight with Lawrence Okolie was postponed, Riakporhe made a strong heavyweight debut in May in Riyadh, stopping Argentina’s Kevin Espindola in the fourth round.
At 35 years old, `The Midnight Train` is keen to accelerate his ascent in the heavyweight ranks. A fight with a renowned name like Joyce would provide an ideal stepping stone. Shalom elaborated on his belief in Riakporhe’s heavyweight potential: “I always felt that Richard was a heavyweight. It frustrated me that he couldn’t perform at cruiserweight anymore – much like Okolie – the injury withdrawal made that difficult. We got him back and he looked brilliant out in Riyadh. I’m excited for him to get into the heavyweight mix. He can do some serious damage now and sparring Martin Bakole is only a good thing.”
