Tye Ruotolo is set to defend his ONE Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship against Pawel Jaworski at ONE Fight Night 41 on March 13th, headlining the co-main event. After a series of impressive MMA victories, including finishes against previously undefeated opponents, Ruotolo reflected on his return to the grappling mats.
«It’s been interesting getting back into jiu-jitsu after focusing so much on MMA,» Ruotolo shared. «I found myself thinking about what I’d missed. It was a process of shaking off the rust, and it’s been genuinely enjoyable. I never felt like I could truly lose my jiu-jitsu, having done it my entire life. The joy of solving those intricate jiu-jitsu problems, which differ from MMA, has been great. I’ve fallen in love with jiu-jitsu all over again, and I’m incredibly excited to defend my title against a formidable opponent like Pawel, a renowned and dangerous leg locker.»
When asked about Jaworski’s primary threat in the upcoming championship bout, Ruotolo acknowledged his opponent’s singular focus. «Pawel has a very specific path to victory, at least in our matchup,» Ruotolo explained. «His specialty is leg locks, and he dedicates all his energy to them. From what I’ve gathered, he’s one of the best and most dangerous leg lock specialists globally. It’s definitely something I can’t take lightly.»
Despite the respect for Jaworski’s skill, Ruotolo expressed unwavering confidence in his own defense. «I genuinely believe that his strongest asset—leg locks—is also where my defense shines brightest. I humbly feel my leg lock defense is unparalleled, perhaps the best in the world. I simply don’t believe I can be leg locked, and I’m eager to put that to the test very soon. Pawel is incredibly dangerous, and I’m excited to challenge that theory. It’s been a long time since anyone truly threatened my legs, and I’m ready to see if that holds true.»
Ruotolo maintained a grounded perspective on the challenge, seeing Jaworski as a significant threat in the heel hook department while also recognizing his own comprehensive skill set. «I strive for realism,» Ruotolo stated. «While confidence is crucial, false confidence isn’t helpful. I’m fully aware of my capabilities; I can finish a match from anywhere, whether with my own leg locks, armbars, or chokes. I am dangerous, and I acknowledge he is too. I just need to approach this match for what it is and come in prepared and aggressive.»
